Update April 28, 2010 - BP said it's supporting and cooperating with government investigations of the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. BP Group Chief Executive Tony Hayward had this to say, "Losing 11 of our industry colleagues is a tragedy for the offshore community, as an industry, we must participate fully in these investigations and not rest until the causes of this tragedy are known and measures are taken to see that it never happens again."

Meanwhile the Coast Guard set fire to the oil spill today in an effort to stop the progression toward the Louisiana coast.

Update April 25, 2010 - The Coast Guard has called off the search for 11 workers missing since the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20th. A release from Coast Guard Rear Admiral Mary Landry states that crews had spent three days searching a large area but could not find the missing workers.

Concerns over the environmental impact have grown as it has been confirmed that oil is leaking from the rig now on the ocean's bottom. Two ROV's (Remote Operated Vehicles) identified 2 leaks from the structure.

Update April 23, 2010 - The offshore oil rig Deepwater Horizon, set ablaze by an explosion on Tuesday, has sunk into the Gulf of Mexico. While concerns were expressed about the potential environmental impact and leaking oil from the rig, 11 workers, missing since the story was first reported, are the top priority reported by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Mike Blakney, spokesman for the Coast Guard said "The Coast Guard is resuming the search for 11 missing crew members during daylight hours. At some point, if they're not found, the Coast Guard will consult with family members and Transocean on whether to stop the search."

April 21, 2010 - An explosion on the oil rig Deepwater Horizon occurred Tuesday at 10 PM. Located about 52 miles southeast of Venice, Louisiana, details of the damage are still being pieced together. It is known that 11 people are missing and the Coast Guard has dispatched helicopters and cutters to assist with the search and rescue operation, and to evacuate remaining workers from the rig. As of 2 PM on Wednesday the Deepwater Horizon was still burning.

Injured workers were taken to West Jefferson Medical Center in the New Orleans suburb of Marrero and the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, Alabama. 115 of the workers were accounted for. Of those workers 17 were taken by air from the rig for medical treatment, 94 arrived at shore without serious injury, and 4 more were transferred to another vessel.

The Deepwater Horizon (Pictured right) is owned by Transocean Ltd. which owns 140 offshore drilling platforms. The lease operator, BP Exploration & Production Inc., and the Coast Guard are helping to manage the crisis. Names of the injured and missing are being withheld at this early stage.
