DePuy Replacement Hip Recall
FREE CASE REVIEW |
On August 24, 2010, DePuy Orthopedics announced a global recall of the total hip replacement system, the ASR™ XL Acetabular System. The recall was initiated following a study which showed that many patients receiving the hip implants suffered from severe pain, stiffness and swelling, followed by popping and grinding sensations, which interfered with their ability to walk, stand, or sit for long periods of time. These symptoms worsened over time resulting in severe disability often requiring a second hip replacement surgery, called revision surgery. Up to 12% of patients with this hip implant required revision surgery.
Design Flaw in the DePuy Hip Implant
Signs of problems with the implant include:
- Swelling around the hip, groin, or lower back
- Pain deep in the groin
- Problems walking
- Popping noises when walking
- Problems rising from a seated to a standing position
- Sensation that the hip is not in the right place
If symptoms persist, they can indicate that the implant is loose, the bone surrounding the implant has fractured or that the ball and socket have become dislocated.
