Stove Tipping Lawsuits - Preventable Tipovers Cause Injuries And Deaths

Published: April 26, 2007

Stove Tipping InjuriesSerious injuries and deaths have occurred from stoves tipping over and pouring scalding liquids or crushing victims beneath their weight.

If anyone you know has suffered injuries from a tipping stove then please read this carefully. Chances are good that these injuries were preventable and damages are due.

Stove tipping has a predictable cause. The oven door is open when weight is applied to it. Most stoves will tip over easily in this common situation. Tragically, many of the victims of these injuries have been children. It doesn't take much weight on an open oven door to cause a pot of boiling water to spill down. In some cases the entire stove has toppled over.

"Stephanie Moran was cooking chicken on the stove in her apartment while her two children, Jarod Moran, 2, and Jamie Hamblin, 1, played in the kitchen. The pot was out of their reach on the back burner when Jarod pulled down the oven door and stood on it. The stove began to tip over. The pot of boiling water and chicken flew into the air, landing on Jamie and scalding the lower right side of his body... That was 12 years ago, but Moran said her son still faces surgery to reduce prominent scars." (Washington Post)

Manufacturers, retailers and installers of stoves know about this danger. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) wrote voluntary safety standards in 1991, long after manufacturers began saving money by making lighter stoves from thinner metal.

Retailers such as Sears ignored this safety notice for years, continuing to sell and install gas and electric stoves without any added safety measures. Millions of homes have this serious safety hazard in them today as a result.

Stove tip-overs are easily prevented. In 1987 stove manufacturers started providing simple brackets with their stoves. These easily-installed brackets are all that's needed to keep the appliance firmly mounted to the wall. The brackets were simply not used.
