Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) - Symptoms And Causes
Published: May 29, 2007
NSF, an acronym for Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis, is a serious medical condition affecting people with kidney disease. The most noticeable effects of NSF appear on the skin and it is also known as NFD, Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy where the word Dermopathy refers to a disease of the skin. NSF is generally considered a more accurate description of the condition.
If you suffer from NSF and have received an MRI scan then please read this article and contact The Law Offices of Robert Davis today. You may be due financial compensation for your injuries.
Symptoms of NSF:
- Thickening of the skin most commonly on the arms and legs. Thickening combined with a feeling of tightening and swelling can prevent some people from moving joints such as elbows and knees. In severe cases this can be crippling to the point where the patient cannot walk.
- Skin turns dark, red or brown in color. Skin texture may be similar to an orange peel in look and feel. In the areas affected; pain, itching and burning sensations may occur.
Causes of NSF:
- While NSF is known to affect patients suffering from kidney disease, it is not found in all patients with kidney disease. Exactly what causes NSF to appear in some and not in others is not always understood.
- Gadolinium MRI contrast agents have been linked to NSF. This occurs in patients already suffering from kidney disease when they are exposed to this substance which is commonly used in MRI scans. The FDA has issued warnings regarding use of these MRI agents for people already suffering from kidney problems.
While not a direct cause of death, NSF is know to contribute to death through its symptoms.
