"The requested warning would state that patients with severe kidney insufficiency who receive gadolinium-based agents are at risk for developing a debilitating, and a potentially fatal disease known as nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF). In addition, it would state that patients just before or just after liver transplantation, or those with chronic liver disease, are also at risk for developing NSF if they are experiencing kidney insufficiency of any severity." MRI Agent Lawsuits - NSF Occurs in Patients With Kidney Problems
Published May 29, 2007
Patients suffering from kidney disease are at risk of developing NSF (Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis) after exposure to a substance given during routine MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans.
During an MRI scan patients are given a substance known as a Contrast Agent which improves the visibility of the scanned images created by the MRI. One common agent containing gadolinium has been shown to cause NSF in patients with existing kidney problems. These MRI contrast agents are sometimes called gadolinium-containing agents or gadolinium-based agents.
The FDA first identified gadolinium agents as a risk in June of 2006. On May 23rd of 2007 the FDA requested that all box labels for gadolinium agents warn of “risk for developing a debilitating, and a potentially fatal disease known as nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF).”
Patients will not usually be aware of exactly what type of agent was used during an MRI. If you have received an MRI and have NSF then contact The Law Offices of Robert Davis for a free legal case review. We can help determine a relation and ensure you receive professional legal representation if necessary.
