Actos lawsuitsActos (pioglitazone) is an oral diabetes medicine that helps control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

Pioglitazone is also a key ingredient in the drugs Actoplus Met, Actoplus Met XR and Duetact. In the first ten months of 2010, more than 2.3 million patients were prescribed a pioglitazone-containing product.

Adverse Effects of Actos

The FDA has issued a warning that Actos may be linked to an increased risk of bladder cancer.

Possible signs or symptoms of bladder cancer linked to Actos may include:

  • Blood in the Urine
  • Pain During Urination
  • Frequent Urination
  • Feeling of Need to Urinate Without Results

The FDA’s decision to request the addition of an Actos black box warning was announced during a June 2007 US House of Representatives hearing. This hearing was convened in light of concerns that the FDA knew about Actos cardiovascular risks, but failed to respond adequately. Several lawmakers and health experts have criticized the FDA for failing to warn the public about known cardiovascular risks associated with Actos.

France and Germany have suspended the sale of Actos in 2011. Another drug manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceutical, Competact, has been implicated in a study in increasing the risk of bladder cancer.
